1) presentation overview of the speech

"Virtuoso Audiovisual Real-Time Performance " by Andreas Weixler (A)

As different forms of machine musicianship, in which computers act like virtuoso musical instruments, are blooming nowadays, we are focusing on a very specialized form of realtime performance with a computer system: audiovisual interaction with traditional acoustic musical instruments in the style of contemporary composition/improvisation. In this talk the development of our own audiovisual realtime computer system will be described and the performances with different kinds of musical instruments together with digital processing machines will be documented.

The goal of this project is to create an interface for visual and music computing for an associated audiovisual composition and to create a performance of participation of interactive sounds and visuals with a virtuoso performance of both sides the acoustic instrumental and the machine musicians.
To achieve this we combine improvised music and realtime computer processes to an audiovisual realtime composition. The sound of live instruments serves as an interface in an audiovisual interactive concert that merges acoustic instrumental sound and realtime computing into an improvisation. With the combination of intuitive improvisation and realtime computing, we want to create a synaesthetical artwork in which all audio and visual parts are equally contributing. While visual images and processes are being generated during the concert, a multichannel realtime audio processing of granular synthesis, spectral delay and FFT filtering fits together minute tonal particles that make up the instrumental sounds into a constantly changing acoustic stream made up of different pitches, duration and positions in the electroacoustic space. The musical and visual components interact and reciprocally influence each other in order to blend into a unique, synaesthetic, improvisational work of art.

"Fragments of memories (produced both by human beings and by computer) generate a synaesthesia of sounds and visuals. The sounds of the bass recorder, serve as interface in an audiovisually interactive concert with our computer system interacting with the performers, i.e. a bass recorder, and the electroacoustic hyper instrument, analyzing the sounds, exchanging data between analysis, audio and video computing.

While visual images and processes are being generated during the concert, a realtime multi-channel audio processing fits together minute tonal particles that make up the instrumental sounds into a constantly changing acoustic stream made up of different pitches, durations and positions in the electroacoustic space.  The musical and visual components interact and reciprocally influence each other in order to blend into a unique, synaesthetic, improvisational work of art."
